Folic Acid Deficiency Linked to Parkinson's
Disease
New research conducted by scientists at the National Institute on
Aging suggests that folic acid deficiency could increase the brain’s
susceptibility to Parkinson’s disease. In the finding, published in the January
2002 issue of the Journal of Neurochemistry, the investigators fed one group of
mice a diet that included folate, while a second group was fed a diet lacking
this vitamin. They then gave the mice moderate amounts of MPTP, a chemical that
can cause Parkinson-like symptoms. In the mice fed folate, MPTP caused only mild
symptoms of disease. But mice fed the folate-deficient diet developed severe
Parkinson-like symptoms.
The scientists found that mice with low amounts of dietary folic acid had
elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood and brain. They suspect that
increased levels of homocysteine in the brain caused damage to the DNA of nerve
cells in the substantia nigra, an important brain structure that produces
dopamine. Loss of dopamine causes the nerve cells to dysfunction, leaving
patients unable to direct or control their movement in a normal manner. In mice
fed adequate amounts of folate, dopamine-producing nerve cells were able to
repair damaged DNA and counteract the adverse effects of homocysteine. However,
similar nerve cells in folate-deficient mice could not repair extensive DNA
damage. As a result, these cells died.
“This is the first direct evidence that folic acid may have a key role in
protecting adult nerve cells against age-related disease,” said Mark Mattson,
Ph.D., chief of the NIA’s Laboratory of Neurosciences. “It is clear from this
study that a deficiency of this vitamin is associated with increased
toxin-induced damage to the dopamine-producing neurons in the mouse brain."
People who have Parkinson’s disease often have low levels of folic acid in their
blood, but it is not clear whether this a result of the disease process or if
they are simply malnourished due to their illness. But based on this study, Dr.
Mattson speculates that consuming adequate amounts of folic acid—either in the
diet or by supplementation—could help protect the aging brain against
Parkinson’s and other neuro-degenerative diseases. Green leafy vegetables,
citrus fruits and juices, whole wheat bread and dry beans are good sources of
the vitamin. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations require the addition
of folic acid to enriched breads, cereals, flours, corn meals, pastas, rice, and
other grain products.
Parkinson's disease occurs when certain nerve cells die or become impaired and
can no longer produce dopamine. Without it, individuals can develop tremor or
trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; rigidity or stiffness of the
limbs and trunk; bradykinesia, or slowness of movement; and postural instability
or impaired balance and coordination. Patients may also have difficulty walking,
talking, or completing other simple tasks. The disease is both chronic and
progressive. Parkinson's is not usually inherited, but incidence of the disease
increases with age, with an average onset at about 60 years. It afflicts about
50,000 Americans annually.
Elevated Homocysteine Levels and Risk for
Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease
New research from scientists at Boston University reveals that elevated blood
levels of the amino acid, homocysteine doubles the risk of developing dementia
and Alzheimer’s disease. Cross-sectional studies have already shown that
elevated plasma homocysteine levels are associated with reduced cognition and
dementia. The new study establishes that the elevated homocysteine levels
actually precede the onset of dementia by many years and are not just one of the
multiple debilitating health effects of dementia. The results are highly
suggestive that controlling plasma homocysteine levels in middle age can greatly
reduce the risk of developing dementia in later years.
The study followed up on 1092 men and women subjects without dementia from the
long-running Framingham Study. They were examined for total plasma homocysteine
levels at base line and compared with levels measured eight years earlier at the
start of the Framingham Study. The researchers used multivariable
proportional-hazards regression to adjust for age, sex, apolipoprotein E
genotype, vascular risk factors other than homocysteine, and plasma levels of
folate and vitamins B12 and B6. The analysis revealed a significant positive
correlation between earlier elevated homocysteine levels and frequency and
severity of newly diagnosed dementia on follow-up. The report appeared in the
Feb 14, 2002, issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. It provides the most
compelling evidence yet of a causal association between high plasma homocysteine
and later, significant memory loss and mental decline.
This research was conducted by Sudha Seshadri, M.D., Alexa Beiser, Ph.D., Jacob
Selhub, Ph.D., Paul F. Jacques, Sc.D., Irwin H. Rosenberg, M.D., Ralph B.
D'Agostino, Ph.D., Peter W.F. Wilson, M.D., and Philip A. Wolf, M.D.
Lowering Homocysteine Levels
There are two dietary supplements that have been conclusively demonstrated to
significantly lower homocysteine levels. These include folic acid and
trimethylglicene (TMG). Leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, whole wheat bread
and dry beans are good dietary sources of folic acid, that if taken in
sufficient quantities can help to prevent excessive buildup of harmful homocysteine levels. Americans typically do not get sufficient dietary intake of
folic acid to prevent dangerous levels of the amino acid. The Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) now requires the addition of folic acid to enriched breads,
cereals, flours, corn meals, pastas, rice, and other grain products. However
many experts agree that higher levels of folic acid through supplementation may
be required to reverse damaging homocysteine buildup.
TMG is a natural food substance found in sugar beets. Recent research has shown
that TMG reduces homocysteine levels, by converting the harmful amino acid into
the nontoxic anti-aging compound SAMe. The process, called methylation, joins a
methyl group onto a cell DNA molecule. Methylation actually protects DNA from
defective aging genes that cause diseases. The extra methyl group prevents these
genes from being expressed in the cell body. Protecting the DNA may reduce the
risk of genetically induced cancers and reduce cellular aging.

Blindness Among the Elderly on the Rise –
Early Detection and Treatment is Key
The National Eye Institute and Prevent Blindness America released a new report
warning that blindness and visual impairment are increasing dramatically among
older Americans. The report states that today more than one million Americans
over the age of 40 are blind and that more than two million more have
significant visual impairment. As the American population continues to age these
statistics are expected to double in the next thirty years. Secretary of Health
and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson stated that most eye disorders can be
greatly reduced by early detection and treatment. "That's why eye health
education programs that encourage those at high risk for eye disease to have
regular dilated eye exams are essential in preventing vision loss. Healthy
vision is a shared responsibility among the government, health care providers,
community leaders, and the public." Visual impairment can be one of the most
debilitating conditions severely impacting a person’s autonomy and ability to
carry on many normal day to day tasks that people normally take for granted.
The leading causes of vision impairment and blindness in the U.S are:
age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts.
Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of blindness and
vision impairment among Americans over the age of sixty, affecting more than one
and a half million elderly Americans. It primarily affects that part of the
retina of the eye that is responsible for sharp central vision. Research
sponsored by the National Eye Institute has recently shown that vitamin C along
with tocopherols and carotenoids can reduce the risk of advanced macular
degeneration by 25 percent. To get the most complete natural tocopherol and
carotenoid complex mixes at wholesale prices see the Life Span Anti-Cancer page.
Glaucoma causes visual impairment or blindness by gradually damaging the optic
nerve. Typically loss of vision due to glaucoma is not experienced until after
significant nerve damage has already occurred. It is estimated that half of all
people with the disease are unaware of it. Today in America, among those over
forty there are over two million diagnosed glaucoma cases, and about the same
number of undiagnosed cases. Because most cases of the disease can be controlled
and the loss of vision arrested by timely diagnosis and treatment, regular
dilated eye exams are very important for anyone over forty who may be at risk.
When vision is lost due to glaucoma it cannot be restored.
A number of research studies have shown that vitamin C supplementation
significantly reduces elevated intraocular pressure in glaucoma cases. Doses
from 2000 mg per day and ranging much higher have been tested. Higher doses of
the vitamin are typically more effective than lower doses. Glaucoma patients are
often instructed to take maximal daily doses of vitamin C to inhibit the
disease. This involves gradually increasing dose levels until abdominal
discomfort is noticed and then pulling back to a comfortable level. There is
also some evidence that the anti-oxidant alpha lipoic acid, can improve visual
function in some people with glaucoma. While these supplements may help inhibit
progress of the disease, they do not cure the disease and must be used
continuously to help control intraocular pressure.
Anti-Depressant Drugs Linked to Possible
Cancer Risk
Can Prozac and similar drugs cause or aggravate brain tumors?
This is the specter being raised by Professor John Gordon a researcher at
Birmingham University. Dr Gordon’s research team has reported in the current
issue of Journal Blood, that they have found direct evidence that a class of
anti-depressant drugs (SSRI’s) may cause more vigorous growth of cancer tumors.
The scientists discovered that in test-tube experiments, anti-depressant drugs
such as Prozac stimulate the growth of a type of cancer called Burkitt's
lymphoma. These drugs are known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI’s)
and include Eli Lilly's Prozac, Lundbeck's Celexa, and GlaxoSmithKline's Paxil.
Serotonin is an important mood controlling neurotransmitter that also appears to
be a key catalyst in stimulating some types of apoptosis, a natural mechanism by
which the body causes genetically damaged cancer cells to die. Professor Gordon
said that these drugs appear to block the mechanism of cell apoptosis and
although these results have only been demonstrated in test tube, the same
mechanism could theoretically take place in people, resulting in more aggressive
tumors. Previous work by Gordon and others has supported the concept that
positive thinking can be integral to the body’s natural defenses against cancer.
Serotonin, whose action is blocked by the anti-depressants, may be key to the
“positive thinking” natural defense system.
Prozac-like anti-depressant drugs are currently used by millions of people
worldwide and constitute one of the biggest classes of sellers for the
international pharmaceutical industry. Spokesmen from the drug companies have
said that there is no evidence whatsoever that these drugs pose any actual
cancer risk in practice. They emphasized that there is no clinical evidence to
back the theory and that the test tube results were likely caused by the high
doses of the drugs used in Dr Gordon’s experimental study. Dr Gordon also stated
that the results of the study are not conclusive that Prozac stimulates tumor
growth. He said, “Although that extrapolation could be valid, there is no direct
evidence from large scale epidemiological studies currently to back it up”.
If you are currently taking or plan to take SSRI’s such as Prozac you owe it to
yourself to visit the Prozac Truth Website. You will find that the potential
side effects of the drug, according to actual user experiences, may go far
beyond anything that you might have imagined. For a natural healthy alternative
to anti-depressant SSRI drugs see DHEA. For anti-cancer supplements that support
natural cancer defense and cell apoptosis see the Life Span Anti-Cancer page.
FDA Warning - Arthritis Painkiller Linked
to Meningitis
The FDA has issued a new warning about the painkiller Vioxx. The popular
arthritis drug has been associated with seven cases of non-bacterial meningitis
since May of 1999 when it was initially approved for acute pain relief. In seven
cases, patients were using Vioxx when they developed the rare form of
meningitis, but the report said that two of the cases lacked sufficient
information to determine whether Vioxx was the cause. The manufacturer is now
required by the FDA to list meningitis as a possible side effect of the drug.
This is not the first time that Vioxx and similar drugs have come under fire. In
another study conducted by cardiologists at the Cleveland Clinic, and published
in the Journal of the American Medical Association, both Vioxx and the equally
popular Celebrex, showed an increased risk of heart attacks, blood clots and
strokes. That study was based on previous clinical trial data published by the
manufacturers. Vioxx and Celebrex were originally introduced and heavily
marketed as breakthrough drugs with all the benefits of traditional arthritis
NSAID drugs, but without the dangerous side effects. Vioxx and Celebrex are
known as COX-2 inhibitors, which act as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. But
now in the study with over 8000 patients the risk of serious and life
threatening cardiovascular problems, was more than double in the COX-2
inhibitors group compared with traditional NSAID drugs, which also have known
cardiovascular risk problems. Furthermore the frequency of heart attacks in both
Celebrex and Vioxx studies are significantly increased compared to other large
studies with patients taking inert placebos. Many researches suggest that until
more research is done with these drugs, that doctors should be cautious in
prescribing either Celebrex or Vioxx to patients with any form of cardiovascular
problem.
If you have osteo-arthritis, we encourage you to learn about liquid glucosamine
complex and the Syn-Flex breakthrough. Liquid glucosamine goes far beyond just
stopping the pain. It can actually halt the progression of osteoarthritis and
unlike synthetic arthritis painkiller drugs, Syn-Flex is 100% natural and safe.

508.9 ALPHA
LIPOIC ACID Powder $34.50
Quantity & Dosage:
50 grams = 200 x 250 mg doses
ALPHA LIPOIC ACID
has multi-faceted anti-aging properties. Known as the "Universal Anti-oxidant",
it is both water and fat soluble and protects all areas of the body, including
cell membranes. Lipoic acid is used by the body to recycle other anti-oxidants,
such as vitamins E and C. It has insulin mimicking properties and protects from
aging by glycation (cross-linking protein molecules by glucose and bound
fructose). Lipoic acid enables the cells to provide more quick bursts of energy
for exercise, reduces lactic acid buildup, and helps produce sustained energy
without increasing fat production. Lipoic acid increases muscle density and size
both for athletes and for elderly people who have difficulty maintaining muscle.
It acts to speed creatine to muscle cells. Lipoic acid is found naturally in
liver extract.

Syn-flex contains the most
powerful pain fighters available in any product in the U.S. market today.
Besides pharmaceutical grade Liquid Glucosamine HCL and Glucosamine Sulfate, and
eleven other synergistic ingredients are added to eliminate inflammation,
restore damaged joints, ensure rapid pain relief, and protect cartilage.
The special Syn-Flex formula
combines the latest scientific breakthroughs in the Arthritis medical community
into one product that is guaranteed to end your pain and halt your
osteoarthritis. Instead of difficult to absorb glucosamine pills and capsules,
or short-lasting rub-on creams, Syn-Flex is a liquid formula for maximal
absorption and long lasting complete arthritis pain relief.
Liquid Delivery Makes All The Difference
in Absorption and Bio-availability
New independent research shows that liquid delivery of glucosamine is much more
effective. Until recently, glucosamine products were made available in
two principal forms. Most were (and still are) in pill or capsule form. (Topical
analgesics or products that are applied externally are used primarily for pain
relief and not for cartilage rehabilitation.)
While it is true that the better quality topical analgesics will provide some
temporary pain relief, they are clearly not designed to halt the progression of
osteoarthritis. On the other hand, while pill and capsule formulas are used for
both pain relief and for cartilage rehabilitation, they do not provide the
optimum or full potential to heal and halt pain. This is simply because most of
the glucosamine and other ingredients taken in this form are not as accessible
to be used by the body. But liquid glucosamine HCL provides a base from which
all ingredients of the complex (including the large Chondroitin Sulfate
molecule) are readily taken up through the intestinal track, and used by the
body to rebuild cartilage and connective tissue.
Over 95% of the pills and capsule formulas on the market today contain only
about 10% glucosamine. More problematic is the quality of the glucosamine that
is used by many manufacturers as well as the failure to incorporate other
necessary ingredients such as Chondroitin Sulfate that act
synergistically to stop the pain and rebuild cartilage and connective tissue.
Most manufacturers have rushed to the market with incomplete glucosamine
products in order to capture quick market share. This is has been a simple issue
of putting profits before results.
Why Your Previous Glucosamine
Products
May Not Have Worked
New independent research has demonstrated that in a different form you will
achieve both faster pain relief and begin the process of rebuilding damaged
cartilage more quickly. That new form is liquid.
